The wood used for instruments is critical to both aesthetic and tonal qualities. Like his mentor, Victor Gardener, Howard Sands chooses maple and spruce he cut himself in Oregon. In the early 1980s, the men worked with the forest service to gain access to towering trees. They cut Englemann Spruce and Big Leaf Maple.
